COVID 19 UPDATE – 01.08.21

Dear All,
We wanted to update you on the situation regarding Brum Tours following the Government’s decision to lift Covid-related restrictions on 19 July. Even though these have ended, the Government has made strong recommendations to the public about its behaviour and we remain in the grip of a pandemic. Given these considerations, we had a meeting at the Old Crown on Wednesday to discuss options with the Management there; to consider up-to-date Government guidance; to assess our own position in respect of tour guides and the numbers that we can have inside the pub; and to evaluate a risk assessment.
With regard to the risk assessment, this has been conducted by a Health and Safety expert and his summary is as follows:-
The guidance from the Prime Minister is for the public to be careful and the suggestions are that from September, only people with double vaccinations will be able attend gatherings.
a. Covid is a notifiable disease and public health authorities retain powers to close any business that presents a risk to public health. There is no specific guidance for tours so Brum Tours must provide the health and safety legal framework.
b. Covid infections are rising.
c. Experts on the pandemic have stated that the peak will occur between mid-August and the end of September.
d. 1 million people are vulnerable and at serious risk if infection spreads.
e. The Controlling mind of a business (in this case, we as Directors) would be responsible for any negative consequences as a result of a tour.
f. Overall, the advice would be not to sanction tours in August and September.
In response to this advice we have carried out a Risk Assessment, ensuring that we consider that the basic principle of the Risk Assessment is that an activity must have a benefit that balances the risk.
In assessing that balance we have especially assessed the following factors:-
• We meet for an hour in an upstairs room in a late fifteenth-century building and following the walk along our real Peaky Blinder trail, we reconvene in that room for another hour to eat and serve drinks and conclude the evening.
However, in the midst of a pandemic, the ventilation in that room is not adequate for large groups, whilst we are unable to locate an alternative room within the pub for our events.
• The demographic of our customers is older and therefore they are more vulnerable to infections.
• Meetings of large groups in badly ventilated rooms risk the spread of infection.
We have also taken into consideration the following factors:
• One of our main guides has quite understandably had to find work whilst we have been closed and is no longer available. No replacement is available.
• The future for events such as ours is uncertain.
In the light of the advice we have received and our Risk Assessment, we have concluded that much as we wish it were otherwise, we are unable to resume the tours in the foreseeable future.
We are very sad about this decision and it has been a difficult one to make as we had been hoping to resume. We know that you will be as disappointed as we are and we thank you for your patience and understanding over the last difficult 18 months. However, we believe that in the circumstances, we have no other choice given that our priority must be the health and safety of our guests and staff.
Obviously, we shall refund everyone who has either bought a tour or has vouchers for a tour. We would therefore ask that you send the details of your booking to so that once we have verified your details we will be able to make a full refund. We respectfully ask that you do this before 31st December 2021.
We would like to keep your details on our database so that we can keep you abreast of any future events or updates; however, if you would prefer us to remove your details, please let us know.
Finally, a big Thank You from us to you for your support over the last 6 years. Until the next time
Best wishes
