Birmingham city tours have qualified, experienced Blue Badge guides to ensure that your tour of the city is as much fun, and as educational and informative as possible. A tour of the city of Birmingham takes in some spectacular architecture, as well as fantastic galleries and museums, concert halls and castles, zoological gardens and gobsmacking public spaces.
With more canal than Venice and more park than Paris, Birmingham is without doubt one of the most interesting and photogenic cities in Europe, if not the world. Here is a brief guide to some of the attractions you can see on a typical Birmingham tour:
- Birmingham’s award-winning library, the largest in Britain and the biggest cultural space in the whole of Europe, is also the tenth most popular attraction for visitors and tourists in the UK.
- Opened for National Telephone Company business in 1896 and the location of Birmingham’s first telephone exchange is the Bell-Edison Telephone Building, situated on Newhall Street. This is just one of the sites that gives you some idea of how integral Birmingham was to the industrial revolution.
- Opened in 1889 by Queen Victoria and christened the Centenary Square a century later to celebrate Birmingham being granted city status, this spectacular public space is today used to stage many of the city’s most significant cultural events. These include various arts festivals, the Frankfurt Christmas Market, the Remembrance Day Services and New Year and Christmas celebrations, which always include a giant ice rink and ferris wheel.
- Beautiful Grade I listed buildings such as Birmingham Town Hall, which was completed in 1834, and the Birmingham School of Art (1885). The Town Hall set the standard for civic buildings right across the country, its design inspired by the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome. Meanwhile the art school was the first municipal art school in the country.
Together with Victoria Square, Cadbury World, Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the Birmingham Eye and far too many sights and experiences to be listed here, these are the attractions that make this wonderful city one of the sightseeing tour capitals of Europe. Choose the city tour that’s right for you and like so many before you, you’ll be enchanted by Birmingham.
